Breakfast on the Bernard Saturday was the first Breakfast on the Bernard at Dido’s. This meal was a tentative test to see if the river community wanted to come together once a month to meet and get to know each other over a cup of coffee and a hot breakfast. I knew it was going to be a good day in the neighborhood to have breakfast, when we turned off of C.R. 2611 onto C.R. 311 and in the field behind the little church were a few Sand Hill Cranes and Snow Geese as far as the eye could see – all waking up to a glorious day and breakfast!
Pete and Sue opened up early, and by the time Roy and I got there,
the smell of coffee and breakfast cooking filled the air. Dido’s was
all decked out for the holidays and Connie Webb, Tom Valliere and
Nancy Kanter had joined Pete and Sue in the kitchen - they were
working that food! I had to be careful not to get in the way – these
folks had pots and pans flying - they sure knew their way around the
kitchen. |

Back out in the dining room, it was 8 a.m. and hungry neighbors
started coming in – slowly at first, then more and more came.
Neighbors came, helped themselves to a breakfast buffet and sat down
at long tables talking with one another – swapping stories, meeting
new people. We had expected around 25 people to partake of the
repast – but at last count, there were at least 50 people who
enjoyed the food and the company. 8 ½ dozen eggs were consumed along
with all of the biscuits that were prepared - 5 pounds of bacon…and
sausage…and ham… and grits…(or what Pete calls grits: Georgia Ice
Cream) and gravy…and orange juice! If you went home hungry it was
your own fault – or maybe your neighbor’s story was just too good to
leave right then.
You can be quite sure he will have " Dishwasher Duty " next month !!! |
