View >From the Deck

On a clear autumn day in November, a group of thirty Houston Presbyterians boarded the paddle wheeler, Yellowstone, to enjoy a cruise on the San Bernard River. Aboard was a passenger whose last name was Ditto. Mr. Ditto had been commander of three naval destroyers during WW II. While aboard, as commander, two of the destroyers were torpedoed and sunk within a day of each other. You can hear his story at the National Museum of the Pacific War (Nimitz Museum) in Fredericksburg, Texas.

The Yellowstone plies the waters of the San Bernard River.

Part way through the trip, the YellowStone met the towboat Louisianan (yes, it has an “n” at the end) pushing a barge of oil slurry downriver. After carefully passing each other, the towboat pilot radioed back to Capt. Ken Wright and asked about the meaning of the F.O.R. flags. Capt. Ken explained it meant Friends Of the River and was a conservation group. The pilot of the towboat thought it meant “families of the river”, which could also be true as one F.O.R./BOD member is working on that very thing. Any day now, we will be welcoming a brand new Friend Of the River San Bernard to his/her “family of the river”.
