Father's Day is Sunday June 18th
Last week I received a phone call from a very nice lady -- after a
hint from her Mother ,she had immediately called me and hurried over
to purchase a F.O.R. flag ,to fulfill
her Dad's father's day wishes .Her father lives on and loves the San
Bernard river .He now has his flag flying proudly at his dock ,a
special gift from his daughter.
Now here is the story of how the very first
Fathers day came to be :
Sonora Dodd, of Washington, had the first idea of a "father's day."
She thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a
Mother's Day sermon in 1909.
Sonora wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart.
Smart, who was a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife died
while giving birth to their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise
the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm
in eastern Washington state.
After Sonora became an adult she realized the selflessness her
father had shown in raising his children as a single parent. It was
her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the
eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man.
Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first
Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June,
1910.
President Calvin Coolidge, in 1924, supported the idea of a national
Father's Day. Then in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a
presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as
Father's Day. President Richard Nixon signed the law which finally
made it permanent in 1972. In honor of all of our Fathers ......Happy
Father's day !
I would like to dedicate this post to :
My Daddy
Robert I. Kelley 1926-2003
and to Mooch's Dad
Joe Webb 1922-1980
and to all of our Fathers who are no longer with us in presence ,but
forever in our hearts .

father!" -- Lydia M. Child
It is with great regret that Eileen and
Buddy Kenneda have submitted their resignation
from the organizing committee effective June 9,
2006. Eileen is training Darrell Powell
for the position of webmaster. Darrell is
a full time river resident near Bernard Acres.
He is a retired computer programmer and will be
a great asset to FOR San Bernard. Eileen
can attest that this is a major endeavor (time,
talent and energy). We really appreciate
Darrell for stepping up to the plate. We
will miss Eileen and Buddy in the final tasks of
FOR's formation. Eileen has put her heart
and soul into this organization with
her intelligence and 'big picture' thinking.
They will be missed.
