Monday, June 12, Jan and I were privileged to
present the case for the re-opening of the mouth of the San Bernard
River at the board of director’s annual meeting of the Brazoria
County Economic Development Alliance. About 40 people were in
attendance including the mayors of many local cities and the leaders
of major Brazoria County corporations.
We touched on ecology, beach renourishment, recreational value and
flooding issues. However, navigational problems at the west gates of
the Brazos River, and the economic disaster to the local economy
that a major accident would cause for the citizens and industry in
Brazoria County was the issue we stressed. Twenty years ago, Sargent,
Texas was able to prove that the Intracoastal Canal commercial
traffic was worth $25 million a day to Texas industries.
Our presentation was well received. The result of the meeting was
promises of a renewed Resolution from the Alliance, and additional
Resolutions were promised by mayors of local cities. When the
audience asked what they could do to aid us, we asked for political
support for Congressman Ron Paul. We also asked that they contact
any politician with whom they had business relations and explain the
urgency of the situation and ask for their support. We explained
that we were not asking for funds, as we were still in the process
of becoming a non-profit organization, but if they were interested
in funding that they should go through Commissioner Dude Payne or
Kelly Hamby, chair of the Brazoria County Shoreline Restoration Task
Force.
It is with great
regret that Eileen and Buddy Kenneda have
submitted their resignation from the organizing
committee effective June 9, 2006. Eileen is
training Darrell Powell for the position of
webmaster. Darrell is a full time river
resident near Bernard Acres. He is a retired
computer programmer and will be a great asset to
FOR San Bernard. Eileen can attest that this is
a major endeavor (time, talent and energy). We
really appreciate Darrell for stepping up to the
plate. We will miss Eileen and Buddy in the
final tasks of FOR's formation. Eileen has put
her heart and soul into this organization with
her intelligence and 'big picture' thinking.
They will be missed.
