WWII Nurses Remembered

As we prepare for our Memorial Day Boat Parade, I would like to offer a Memorial Day tribute to a little-known group of  “all volunteer” WWII heroes—the Nurses of WWII. These WWII Nurse heroes endured torpedoes, bombings, and Japanese prison camps—67 of the nurses were captured by the Japanese as they nursed the war wounded in the caves on Corregidor Island. Six other WWII Nurses are buried beside their patients at Anzio. The Nurses of WWII served at Pearl Harbor, Corregidor, Anzio, the Battle of the Bulge,  Iwo Jima, and all over the world. Two Hundred Seventeen WWII nurses are buried in US cemeteries overseas. The military honors (even though many entered duty with no basic military training) received by the WWII nurses include the following:

Distinguished Service Medal
Silver Star
Soldier’s Medal
Bronze Star Medal
Air Medal
Army Commendation Medal
Purple Heart

Most of  the WWII Nurses are no longer alive but their legacy and memory will  live as long as we remember them.  Please pause, and remember with me, as we proudly stand and salute the nurses of WWII in recognition of a job well done.
