Human line of 206 people
stretched from River to Gulf to free the San Bernard River

Mouth of San Bernard comes to an abrupt halt.
In the distance, you can barely see the boat
in the Gulf where the river should flow.

It was a spectacularly beautify day. Our best estimate is that 206 people attended the Can You Dig It event Saturday, May 13th, at the mouth of the San Bernard River.  The river that once flowed directly into the Gulf now comes to an halt 150 yards from the Gulf due to a buildup of sand coming from the re-routed Brazos River mouth.

U.S. Congressman
Ron Paul

Boats and shuttles, flying F.O.R. San Bernard flags, began arriving at noon and continued throughout the day. At 2:00 PM, we formed a human line from River to Gulf and symbolically free the river by digging out the sand.

Several dignitaries were there to help us. Our U.S. Congressman Ron Paul arrived by shuttle with a huge shovel, visited with members, and participated in the symbolic dig. Dodie Armstrong from the Congressman's LJ office was also there. In the picture right, Congressman Paul and Jan Edwards observe the festivities. Visit Congressman Paul's website.

Shane Sklar
Candidate for U.S. Congressman
14th District of Texas

Also arriving by shuttle, Shane Sklar,  candidate for U.S. Congressman, 14th District of Texas, with his Campaign Manager Joel Coon, who participated in the dig and mingled throughout the day with members of F.O.R. San Bernard. Visit his website.

Mary Ruth Rhodenbaugh,
candidate for County Commissioner
Precinct 4, and her son Douglas

Mary Ruth Rhodenbaugh, candidate for County Commissioner Precinct 4 arrived early with her shovel, and stayed late visiting and having a good time. She and her son, Douglas Rhodenbaugh

Also present were Florin Vrazel, candidate for Brazoria County Judge; and Sean Pirtle was present representing his brother, Shane Pirtle, candidate for County Commissioner Precinct 4.

The younger members enjoyed a buried treasure hunt and followed the hints to a fallen tree in the shape of a Y, and logs in the shape of an X, to dig up boxes full of pirate playthings.

Despite the very serious reason for the event, it was a fun day. If you haven't been to the beach at the mouth, make an effort to do it sometime this summer. The sand is clean and the beach is little-used. And, we fervently hope that all that beautiful sand will be gone very soon.

Facts reporter, Chris Robinson was there, and our event was front page news in The Facts Sunday.
