LITTLE SAN BERNARD RIVER The Little San Bernard River, or German Branch, rises in northern Colorado County three miles southeast of Frelsburg and flows southeast for 17 miles to its mouth on the San Bernard River, The terrain is level to gently sloping, and the topsoil is deep, fine sandy loam. The area surrounding the river along its upper reaches is densely wooded with mixed oak, pine, cedar, and associated hardwoods with an understory of yaupon and wild grape. This area is generally used as unimproved pasture for cattle and as wildlife habitat. Before the stream crosses State Highway 949 between Bernardo and Cat Spring, the land around it becomes nearly level and is improved to produce excellent pasture, hay, and grain crops.

The face of the river, in time, became a wonderful book . . . which told its mind to me without reserve, delivering its most cherished secrets as clearly as if it had uttered them with a voice. And it was not a book to be read once and thrown aside, for it had a new story to tell every day. ~Mark Twain, "Life on the Mississippi" |
